In Week 9 of my app development project, I transitioned into the material design and 3D modelling phase for "iConnect". This phase marked a significant turning point as I finalized the app’s name and began working on key visual elements. The name iConnect was chosen to symbolize the personal nature of the app’s core function: connecting the individual (“I”) to their environment, aiming to alleviate feelings of loneliness in unfamiliar places.
The primary goal of this phase was to develop a cohesive brand identity and start the modelling process for AR features. I also began designing characters and creating animation for the app. The site visits to iconic locations like Auckland’s Sky Tower were essential for capturing the details needed for the AR functionality. This phase involved a combination of creative, technical, and research work, pushing me to apply various skills and tools, including Blender, Nomad, and Procreate.

Action

1. Brand Identity Development: I brainstormed and finalized the app’s name, iConnect, and designed a logo that visually represented its mission. The lowercase "i" with a travel hat and location marker embedded into the design symbolized the connection between the user and their surroundings, reinforcing the app's goal of fostering a sense of belonging.

2. 3D Modelling for AR: For the AR component, I conducted on-site visits to landmarks like the Sky Tower, taking photos from multiple angles to inform my modelling process. I then used Blender to build a detailed, accurate 3D model of the Sky Tower.

3. Character Design and Animation: I created character models using Nomad and developed animations by exporting incremental movements into Procreate. The animations were designed to be engaging and immersive, enhancing the user experience through interactive storytelling within the app.

Result
By the end of Week 9, I had successfully accomplished several key tasks:
1. The iConnect brand identity was finalized, including the logo, which effectively conveyed the app’s mission.
2. The 3D model of the Sky Tower was completed and ready for AR integration, giving the app a significant landmark for users to interact with.
3. The character models and animations were finished, adding dynamic elements to the app's storytelling.
These results met my expectations and contributed significantly to the overall user experience. The on-site research helped improve the accuracy of the 3D models, and the branding decisions ensured that the app had a cohesive identity. The experience also highlighted the importance of iteration, as I needed to make adjustments to the app flow and animation based on test feedback.
The primary implication of these results was a clearer, more immersive app experience that aligned with the emotional goals of iConnect. However, the process also revealed areas for improvement, particularly in terms of time management and testing. I realized that I could have started the animation process earlier to allow for more iterations.

Learning
1. Thorough Research and Preparation: Visiting real-world locations, like the Sky Tower, before modeling allowed me to create more realistic AR experiences. I will continue to prioritize research in future projects to ensure accuracy and relevance.
2. Cohesive Branding: A strong brand identity plays a significant role in user engagement. The work done on the iConnect logo and name helped unify the app’s purpose with its visuals. Moving forward, I will ensure that branding is considered from the start of any design project.
3. Tool Mastery: The use of tools like Blender, Nomad, and Procreate greatly enhanced the quality of my outputs. I’ve gained more confidence in using these tools and will continue to explore advanced features to refine my design skills.
Action plan
1. Expand 3D Modelling Skills: I will dedicate more time to learning advanced features in Blender, enabling me to create more complex and realistic models for future projects.
2. Time Management: I need to better allocate time to critical tasks like animation, allowing for more iterations. In future projects, I will establish clearer deadlines for each phase to avoid time crunches.
3. Continue Branding Exploration: I will continue to explore cohesive branding strategies, ensuring that every aspect of the design—from visual elements to user experience—communicates the app’s core message clearly and consistently.
