DELIVER

In the last Develop phase, after discussing with my client, I decided to choose the basketball stand for my final design. In the Deliver phase, I will further refine it to make my final design.

Iterative

The first model

I made the first model with Rhino based on the prototype. I was confident that it was the most perfect work, and I didn't need to change it again. But after the discussion at the tutor meeting, I found that I forgot to share with my client and ask for opinions during the process, and even forgot to improve the question raised by my client. . . So, I made a second model.

The second model

In the second model, I added the problem that the client mentioned last time - the scoreboard only has one function. To improve this problem, I added two sets of numbers on both sides of the basketball board, one for total field goal attempts and one for field goal percentage. This is convenient for trainers to know their level more clearly, which is beneficial to training. I added a timer above the backboard, and the user can see how many balls they can shoot in a certain period. I shared this rendering with my client.

This time, it is good for the function on the backboard to have increased. But to me, the first time I looked at the numbers above, I don’t know what they meant. Another point is that I'm more curious about how to control the basketball board's timer? climb on the pole?

I really didn't expect this! . . .

So I made a second modification...

The third model

In the third model, I categorize the data on the backboard to see it more clearly. During the design process, I have been thinking about how to control the timer on the basketball board better and more conveniently. Once I used my mobile phone to control the printer to print, at that time, I suddenly thought why can't I design such an app to control the basketball stand? so this time added this function. This app connects it via Bluetooth to set a timer and view the user's previous training records.

The functions are more complete! I am pleasantly surprised by the addition of the app, which is very clever, has the mobile device connected to the basketball hoop, and can view training records. It helps users observe their status and know if they are progressing, which is excellent. I think the top half of the hoop is fine, but I have a question about the bottom baffle. Is it only forward-facing?

Yes, this is designed so that you can better perform spot shooting drills.

Well, the design of this rebound can indeed reduce the number of pick-ups, but if it only faces forward, when I shoot from the other side, the ball will also roll forward.

I didn't think about it

So I made my third revision...

The fourth model

This time, I changed the baffle and the lights on the backboard. Changed the angle of inclination of the baffle and added slide rails to adjust the baffle at different angles to facilitate shooting from different positions. Regarding the modification of the lights, I asked my client and a few friends who play basketball. According to the feedback, I changed the lights that are only on when a goal is scored to a light that is always on because it will distract the user's attention and if the lights are on all the time, it helps them focus.

I think this is now my ideal training equipment! You did very well!!!👍

Video Demonstration

made by Rhino & Keyshot

1. Basketball stand

This video shows how it works. When scored, the stand says Ohh! Perfect! When missing a shot, the stand says Never mind one more try to cheer users up. I didn't make this outcome directly.

2. baffle

In addition, there also have a removable baffle for different shooting positions.

3. app

it can be controlled by using Bluetooth, and the App can be installed on the mobile phone to set the Timer and view the record.

Feedback from my client and testers

For my final design, I looked for people who had been involved in the questionnaire at the Discover phase and conducted the survey again.

·How well do you think my final design will solve this problem?

Client:9
Tester1: 7.5
Tester2: 7.5
Tester3: 6.5
Tester4: 7

·How much do you like the aesthetic?

Client:8.5
Tester1: 7.5
Tester2: 8
Tester3: 7
Tester4: 9

·Would you choose to use this basketball stand for training?

Client: Of course, yes!
Tester1: If it can be more convenient to carry, I will be more willing to buy it.
Tester2: Yes!
Tester3: The function of Bluetooth is very attractive, I will choose to buy it
Tester4: The color scheme appeals
to me. If I had to buy a basketball stand, I would choose this.

·What do you think could be done better?

Some New Ideas...

A machine can launch the ball out.

The more invisible net is made of a material like the fishing line.

The top of the pole is attached to another pole for added stability.

A removable basketball shooting machine with a collection net and sound.

The sound can play music.

...

Solution rationale and reflection

In this project, I think the problem-finding process at the beginning was good because, during the Discover phase, I discovered that the main reason most people have a negative mentality during basketball training is running around to pick up the ball and constantly repeating the act of shooting. Because they are training for better performance in basketball games, I quickly positioned my HMW statement about increasing motivation and improving shooting percentage. But in the design process, lack of communication with my customer led me to get stuck in my world for a while and think I had the final design, but luckily someone reminded me of this. Then I get in touch with my client quickly. With his advice and feedback, I completed the final work.

HMW was the most helpful method I learned as it allowed me to identify the problem that needed to be solved and be more determined to solve it. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19, I haven't been able to get out of the house and meet my partner and give me more real feedback when after he experienced the prototype. It's a shame that I didn't make out a physical basketball stand, but I learned how to make animated videos in Rhino and Keyshot, which is an unexpected bonus.

I think my design will become more and more portable in the future hahaha so people can take the basketball stand to somewhere they want to practice. It becomes more flexible.
