With the observation and insight in the previous discovery phase, I will do further research to narrow down the scope of the problem.

Define phase brainstorming
Patterns
- Most boys choose basketball as their primary sport.
- Most of the personal basketball training is about dribbling and shooting.
- Missing shot is more likely to be bounced far than a goal.
- Most of them have a bad mood about running a long way to pick up the ball.
- They like to dribble in place before shooting and then start shooting
- Hands sweat a lot while playing basketball
- They sometimes wipe their hands with clothes when they are already shooting.
Surprises/ Curious
- A large majority of people choose to play basketball because they think it is possible to grow taller in the process of shooting.
- Some people will privately conduct personal basketball training in order to improve their basketball skills.
- People often choose to rest when no goals are scored.
- The basketball bounces farther on the basketball hoop or basketball rim than on the floor when shooting.
- It is harder to shoot from the sides of the rim than from the middle.
- They need more spot shooting drills to develop muscle memory when shooting.
- When shooting on both sides of the rim, the ball bounces over the rim to the other side, they will choose to run to the other side to pick up the ball and shoot again.
- The situation where the ball is bounced into the distance mainly occurs in individual practice rather than in a basketball team.
Contradictions & Tensions
- Most people are reluctant to pick up a ball that bounces far away.
- With a streak of missed shots and the ball bouncing into the distance, their subsequent field goal percentage drops significantly.
- Some people just want to practice shooting and the action of picking up the ball is not efficient for training. This leads to their resistance to picking up the ball.
-The lack of shots and the need to pick up the ball hurts their confidence and makes them less motivated to continue playing basketball.
- People who practice basketball often fail to shoot the ball gives rise to feeling anxious and more resentful when they pick up the ball. They're more resentful when they pick up the ball while they have no goal than they shoot it, which leads to a drop in the shooting percentage.
- Even if they throw the ball, they need to pick up the ball again, but they don’t have to run very far.
- Although they don't like picking up the ball, it doesn't affect their love for basketball.
We met...
- The person who practices shooting runs a long way to pick up the ball.
- Teenagers choose to play basketball in order to exercise and grow taller.
- Boys think that the shooting position is handsome and can attract the attention of the opposite sex.
- Girls don’t want to get hurt when they play basketball.
- A basketball player who wipes his sweat on his clothes for a better catch.
We were interested to learn
- Can spot shooting practice generate muscle memory to improve hit rate?
- Does playing basketball help to grow taller?
- What cause makes it harder to shoot from the side?
- Does the material of the rim affect the bounce of the ball?
- Can a handsome basketball pose attract the opposite sex?
- Causes of sweaty hands.
It would make a difference if...
- The ball will automatically return to the hands of the people after shooting, which will improve training efficiency.
- Make field goal percentage increase by 60%.
- A equipment to help better conduct spot shooting training.
- Change the mentality of people when they don’t score.
- The material of the basket is soft, so the ball will not bounce far away due to the interaction force.
- Basketball will absorb sweat from hands.
In this stage of brainstorming, I found that most of the boys who choose basketball will do other personal training. This training is not for entertainment or play but generally to grow taller or improve ball skills to be able to have a better performance in the basketball game. However, there were also many problems that plagued them during training, such as sweaty hands, picking up the ball and so on. .
I am surprised and curious that most people choose basketball because they feel that playing basketball will help them grow taller so they prefer to shoot and do more spot training in the process of playing basketball to build muscle memory. They found it easier to shoot from the center of the rim than from either side of the rim.
What I find paradoxical is that even if they lose confidence and are reluctant to pick up the ball when they don't score in a row, it doesn't hinder their love of basketball. They may choose to rest but not decide to give up basketball.
HMW statements
As a designer, my purpose is to better help customers solve problems so I plan to start from the perspective of different users, analyze what they want and makeup User stories, and make some statements about How might we according to them.
1.User stories
(1) As a basketball lover, I want to improve my shooting percentage so that I can perform better in basketball games.
(2) As a teenager, I want to avoid running to the distance to pick up the ball during training shooting so that I can increase the number of shots and help me grow taller.
(3) As a boy studying in school, I want to have a more handsome shooting posture and higher score in the process of playing basketball so that I can attract the attention of female students
(4) As a basketball, I want to people who carry me with less sweaty hands so that I can have a refreshing body.
(5) As a hoop, the person I want to shoot can go straight into the hoop so that I can rest better instead of waking up every time by the ball hits.
(6) As a student, I don’t want to get hurt while playing basketball so that I can better devote myself to study instead of being troubled by injury.
2. How might we...
-
How might we provide a service to make basketball practice better for fixed-point training?
-
How might we design a product that helps them practice shooting in personal training to improve their shooting percentage?
-
How might we reduce hand sweat in the process of playing basketball and catch the ball better?
-
How might we design a product to reduce the number of times to pick up the ball in the process of playing basketball, so as to better carry out fixed-point training and improve training quality.
-
How might we design a device for basketball players that can absorb hand sweat without affecting their basketball action and better assist them in the shooting?
-
How might we inspire the confidence of people who have missed lots of shots so that they can better engage in training?
-
How might we supply a service or device to help teenagers who want to grow taller both enjoy basketball and promote height gain?
-
How might we help people in basketball practice who want to reduce the number of hurts during the sport?
-
How might we design a product or provide a service for people who often have personal training to improve their shooting percentage so they can enjoy basketball and not easy to give up?
Doing a brainstorming on HMW which made the problem become clearer. To narrow down the problem further I need to do more activities to achieve this.
AEIOU
I used the AEIOU framework to define my client's problem, categorizing the information which was gathered earlier.
Process
These photos record a hoop, three different types of ground material and shooting positions.
These videos record different situations of playing basketball, such as school and stadium.
A: activity E: environment I: interaction O: object U: user

Mind mapping
Before drawing the mind map, I thought about the problem that the client wanted to solve--the shoot was not accurate. From this problem, I can think of four reasons. Later, in the process of drawing the map, I analyze each problem through three aspects, namely why? Equipment (what already exists) and lead to (what will it lead to).

Summary
Through several activities this time, I narrowed down the range of the problem step by step, which made me gradually understand the problem I wanted to solve in the process. I also know by searching that there is no scientific research to show that playing basketball can promote height.
Most people are more concerned about their scoring when playing basketball, for having a nice shot, they need to practice shooting continuously, which makes them additionally do personal shooting training. I also find that they like to practice shooting because some of them want to grow taller quickly. So, I narrowed the survey down to teens who would do some extra training, but in the process, I found that most of them were irritated by constantly missing shots and picking up the ball.
So I decided "How might we design a product or provide a service for people who often have personal training to improve their shooting percentage so they can enjoy basketball and not easy to give up?" as my final research direction.
