Kings & Queens

Spirited Away is my favorite animated movie. When I was a child, I couldn't understand much about the plot. I only remember the pictures and soundtracks in the film. Later, when I grew up and revisited this movie, it gave me a whole new feeling. The color matching, characters, scenes and buildings in this animated movie are very beautiful, and I enjoy every second of watching. At the same time, this story also gave me a great feeling, just like in the movie, "Don't forget your name!" I hope that I don’t lose myself in the current impetuous environment.

Chihiro passes through a dilapidated tower to reach another strange world in the story. The place where Chihiro works is also a building with Chinese classical style. Such buildings often appear in the movie, and I left a deep impression on myself when I was a child. Impression, every time I see this type of tower and pass through the hole in the middle, I wonder if I will reach another world like Chihiro?

Process

I initially chose the rook in chess because it was shaped like a tower and based on it. Design the rook and the traditional Chinese buildings that appear in Spirited Away. At the beginning of the movie, Chihiro enters another world through the hole in the tower, and I think this hole is an indispensable element in the chess pieces I designed.

According to the first sketch, I chose No. 3 for the next design because, in traditional Chinese buildings, the beams on the roof often have corner shapes at the top. The design of windows is also often seen in movies, and although this type of window is commonly used in western countries, I think it feels fantastic to combine Chinese and Western architecture.

This is my sketch of the final design. It includes the data and modeling thinking process I will use on Rhino. Because I am not familiar with Rhino, I simplified it a lot, and it did not achieve the effect I expected, but I have tried my best.

Final Design

This is my final design, a bell tower with traditional Chinese architecture. My favorite is the beam on the roof; it looks very characteristic! In this design, I am not very satisfied with the design of the roof, and I can't make the surface of the roof, which is a little regrettable. It is difficult for me to get familiar with new software for this project. In the beginning, in the process of modeling, I often found that what I thought and what I did were two different things. I once doubted whether my hand was “broken,” and I accepted it slowly. From the beginning of knowing nothing about software to designing work with this software later, it is very achievable. Even though modeling was complex for a beginner like me, I enjoyed it when I was working on this project; I didn't feel like I was doing an assignment but telling a story. In the next project, I will adjust my learning mentality. Not everything can be done at the beginning. Design is a process that needs to be accumulated. It does not need to be done well. Enjoy the process, and you will come better before you know it.
